Overview of Istanbul districts and history of them

As per the recent instructions for the city planning in effect from April 2008, Istanbul province is distributed into 39 major districts, which was previously 32. Among them 25 districts are falling on the European side while the remaining 14 districts fell on the Asian side. There are 936 localities in all the districts and each district is controlled by the local municipality, which is elected by the residents living in the particular district. The overall control on all the districts is maintained by the Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), which organise all the activities of the individual districts.
